Popcorn Removal

We remove popcorn ceilings, smooth them out, texture them, and make them paint-ready.

Generally, we remove popcorn ceilings from empty homes. There are times we will remove popcorn ceilings in an occupied home if conditions permit. Often, homeowners may read or watch a video and gain a general idea of what needs to happen. However, until they have someone come in and prep correctly, they get to see first-hand what is actually involved.

Preparing To Remove The Popcorn Ceiling

Popcorn Removal

Removing popcorn is definitely a task. Some popcorn ceiling removal is more difficult than others. I have found through the years that when a ceiling has been painted with a satin or semi-gloss paint, you have to work a little harder than if it was only painted with flat ceiling paint.

However, before you can start the process. You have to ask questions.

Are the walls going to be painted? If so, you have to plan to protect them with plastic and the right type of tape that will not remove the paint on the walls once you remove it. When using tape on the walls, you want to pay attention to what type of paint is on the walls, which in my opinion, will determine the type of tape you may want to use. I personally use 3M ScotchBlue 1.88 in. x 60 yds. Original Multi-Surface Painter’s Tape. You purchase at your local hardware store. Most of the walls we use this tape are semi-gloss or satin walls. When taping the walls, you want to ensure it is airtight and not let any water damage or stain the walls, windows, and door-frames.

If you are painting the walls, it really doesn’t matter that much. It really boils down to preference and how much you want to clean up.

before removing any popcorn texture from your ceilings, you may want to find out the date or year it was originally applied. Or how old the home is will give you a general idea to prevent asbestos exposure. The best way to know is to have part of the ceiling tested. To learn more about it, go here>https://www.epa.gov/

You will need a sander with sand-paper preferably 120 grit, and 220 grit. Make sure the sand-paper you choose is for the device or tool of your choice for sanding. You will also need some type of sprayer to spray warm water on the ceiling to loosen up the texture particles on the ceilings. We use a simple garden sprayer which works wonders for us.
